Khan ranked #2 WBC at 147, Mosley #5

By Scott Gilfoid: The World Boxing Council rankings are out for June and it looks like they’ve put Amir Khan (28-3, 18 KO’s) back at #2 WBC in their welterweight rankings. Khan has lost two out of his last four fights, and he almost lost his last fight against non-top 15 ranked Julio Diaz last April. If that’s not enough, the WBC now has 41-year-old Shane Mosley (47-8-1, 39 KO’s) ranked #5, and Pablo Cesar Cano at #12 WBC.

Mosley won his first fight in four years last month. Before his win over 2nd tier fighter Cano last May, Mosley hadn’t won a fight since beating Antonio Margarito in January 2009. The WBC’s rankings seem more like a popularity contest than a sign of what the fighters have accomplished. Rankings are supposed to be an indication of how well a fighter is doing in the sport.

Well, when you’ve got a fighter having lost two out of his last four fights like Khan has, and another fighter who has won only once in the past four years like Mosley, it just doesn’t make sense to have Mosley or Khan ranked in the top 15 at 147. Khan has fought exactly one time at welterweight in beating Julio Diaz, and even that win was controversial because I had Khan losing that fight by a 12 unanimous decision.

Pablo Cesar Cano is now ranked #12 by the WBC. Cano has lost his last two fights and has lost three out of his last six fights. How do you rank a fighter in the top 15 when he’s lost his last two fights? I think Cano deserves to be ranked in the 2nd tier because there needs to be standards for the 147 lb. division.

I’d like to see the WBC sort out their rankings because it’s really off putting to see guys ranked highly when they’ve not been winning of late or barely even fighting at 147.
