Joe Cortez favors Mayweather to beat Canelo

mayweather334By Dan Ambrose: Former referee Joe Cortez believes that Floyd Mayweather Jr’s experience could give him enough of an edge to beat Mexican Saul “Canelo” Alvarez in their fight on September 14th in Las Vegas, Nevada. Cortez is impressed with the poise and maturity of the 22-year-old Canelo, but he wonders if the fight is taking place too soon for him. He thinks if it took place in a year or two he’d have a better chance at beating Mayweather.

Cortez said to Esto at oem.com.mx “I do not know if you have the experience that you will have one or two more years. Mayweather is 36. 36 is not the same as 22, but he brings a lot of experience in the ring and has a style that is very hard to beat, has good power and I think that right now it’s going to be a little hard for Canelo because Mayweather has the experience…the experience will be too much for the boy…I’m favoring Mayweather.”

Mayweather will win not because of his experience. He’s going to beat Canelo because he’s a much better athlete than him, has better stamina by far, is a much better defensive fighter, and he’s just so much more skilled.

Canelo is 22, but he’s a flat-footed fighter at that age and he doesn’t move well around the ring for a fighter his age, and he’s not going to be fast enough to land his shots on Mayweather with him fighting in a mostly defensive posture.

Canelo would have had a chance to beat Mayweather last year in May when he fought Miguel Cotto. That was the fight that Mayweather chose to go toe-to-toe with Cotto instead of using his defense to get out of the way of shots. With his trainer Roger Mayweather wanting Mayweather Jr. to fight in a more offensive-minded manner, he brawled with Cotto and ended up taking a lot of punishment in winning by a close 12 round unanimous decision.

If that had been Canelo in the ring with him on that night instead of Cotto, Mayweather would have some problems because Canelo weighs even more than the 165 lb. Cotto and Mayweather had problems with his weight. However, Mayweather learned his lesson from the Cotto fight and his trainer is now his father Floyd Sr., who has Mayweather Jr. fighting in his old style of fighting defensively instead of looking to go toe-to-toe.

What this means is that Canelo doesn’t have a prayer in this fight. He’s going to be hitting nothing but air all night long and I suspect he’ll gas out before long and turn red in the face from exhaustion.
