Gritty Hard-Fought Win For Nelson Over Cuello
(Photo credit: Dibella Entertainment) By Payman Kohan: After 10 busy rounds Willie Nelson (21-1-1, 12 KO) from Columbus, Ohio, defeats Luciano Cuello (26-3, 12 KO) of Argentina by Unanimous Decision (97-93, 97-93, 96-94) in Foxwoods Casino, CT.
Cuello fought hard and showed toughness throughout the fight and negated much of the lengthy Nelson’s jab, but when he had Nelson hurt in the 7th round and 10th round, he did not capitalize. Nelson stayed busy on the inside, much to the dismay of his trainer, citing that Willie was fighting like a small guy. It wasn’t certain whether or not Nelson would gas himself out after throwing many of his power punches in the first round, but he showed tenacity and was awarded the UD.
Cuello has had his chances against Julio Cesar Chavez Jr and Saul Alvarez and has lost both of those fights, therefor the opportunity for big fights on HBO may not be in the near future. The win tonight for Nelson gives him more experience and allows this young fighter to work on using his length and height. At times he looked like a young Paul Williams with lots of potential. We will see what will become of Willie “The Great” Nelson.
