Golovkin wants Chavez Jr. and Mayweather fights

golovkin200By Dan Ambrose: WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (26-0, 23 KO’s) has former WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (46-1-1, 32 KO’s) and Floyd Mayweather Jr. (44-0, 26 KO’s) high on his list for fighters that he wants to face in the near future. I’m sure Golovkin would take a fight against either if one of them were open to facing him.

Golovkin said this to esnewsporting when asked if he’d like to fight Chavez Jr., “Absolutely, why not? I want this fight. In the future I want to fight Mayweather. It’s my dream.”

The Mayweather fight is probably not ever going to happen because Golovkin is too strong and too heavy for Mayweather, even though Golovkin probably weighs less than Mayweather’s opponent for September 14th WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez. Just by virtue of Golovkin being in the middleweight division, that right there probably rules him out for a fight with Mayweather. But the biggest reason why Golovkin probably will never get a fight with Mayweather is due to his popularity with casual boxing fans. Golovkin isn’t well known among casual boxing fans, and he doesn’t have a large built in fan base the way that Canelo does with his Mexican fans. There’s not a huge Kazakhstan population in the United States or near to the U.S. like there is with Canelo and his Mexican fans.

Chavez Jr. likely won’t fight Golovkin either. I can’t see Chavez Jr’s promoter Bob Arum agreeing to take that fight because of the danger that Golovkin would present Chavez Jr. Arum will likely pick out Brian Vera next for Chavez Jr. while they wait to see if they can set up a rematch between Chavez Jr. and Sergio Martinez.

Golovkin will be facing Matthew Macklin (29-4, 20 KO’s) this this month on June 29th at the MGM Grand at Foxwoods Resort, Mashantucket, Connecticut, USA. This is an important fight for Golovkin because Macklin is one of the tougher guys that he’s been in with.
