golovkin33By Sevak Sarkisian: As many boxing fans already know, exciting middleweight Gennady Golovkin will make his return to the ring to take on Mathew Macklin on June 29th on HBO’s Boxing After Dark series.

Gennady Golovkin (26-0 -23 KO’s) has one the highest knockout ratios in the current boxing landscape. He is also the current WBA world middleweight champion. Along with his great punching power, he is very good at cutting off the ring and loves to come forward and stalk his opponents and apply consistent pressure. He throws every punch in the book very well and has excellent punching technique. He also has an extensive amateur back round to fall back on.

Golovkin’s most notable wins have come against Kasim Ouma, Gregorz Proksa and Gabe Rosado. All those fighters are good. However, none of them are elite nor are they the best in their divisions. In fact, I believe it is safe to say that Golovkin hasn’t fought a top five middleweight yet in his career.

Mathew Macklin is a step up from his usual competition, however Macklin is arguably not a top five middleweight and is currently ranked 6th on The Ring’s ratings.

Mathew Macklin is an Irish fighter who has a record of (29-4-20 KO’s). He is a two time world title challenger and he will be looking to take full advantage of this world title shot as it will be his third try and possibly last.

Macklin is coming off a first round knockout win over former jr. middleweight champion Joachim Alcine. He has fought the best fighter in the division (Sergio Martinez) and gave a good account of himself.

Macklin eventually ended up getting stopped inside the distance by Martinez, but he showed that he is a determined challenger. However, Macklin has obvious short comings such as fading and getting fatigued as the fight goes on. Against a fighter like Golovkin, one must be supremely conditioned because of the fact that they will be going backwards and be moving around the ring a lot because of Golovkin’s stalking pressure style.

Fatigue helped Macklin lose to Martinez last year, I believe we will feel tired much faster against Golovkin considering the fact that Golovkin always likes to stalk his opponents and cut off the ring. I think Macklin is a good middleweight, but I just simply don’t think he has enough in the gas tank to last against Golovkin. I expect Golovkin to finish Macklin inside the distance for a middle to late rounds stoppage win.
