762(Photo credit: Dibella Entertainment) By Scott Gilfoid: WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (27-0, 24 KO’s) left no doubt who the better fighter was tonight in stopping an over-matched Matthew Macklin (29-5, 20 KO’s) in the 3rd round with a crushing left to the body that left Macklin down on the canvas in agony holding his midsection and grimacing in total pain at the the MGM Grand at Foxwoods Resort, in Mashantucket, Connecticut, USA.

The referee Eddie Cotton gave a 10 count and officially halted the brutal slaughter at 1:24 of the 3rd round with Macklin still on the canvas clutching his midsection.

It was immediately clear in the difference in class and power between the two fighters, as Golovkin nailed Macklin with a couple of hard shots that sent him scurrying like a rabbit. Macklin didn’t want any part of Golovkin’s power and he ran for the entire round.

Near the end of the round, Golovkin nailed Macklin with a big shot that sent Macklin flying into the ropes that might have been a knockdown had the ropes not been there to hold him up.

In the 2nd round, Golovkin cut Macklin over his left eye.

After the fight, Macklin said “He’s the best fighter I’ve fought by far. He’s better than Sergio Martinez. He’s the real deal.”

Macklin was able to land some shots in the 2nd and 3rd, but his power wasn’t enough to stop Golokin’s forward progress or slow his attacks down any.

What was so impressive about Golvokin was his patience. He was so calm in stalking Macklin around the ring, leaning away from Macklins occasional shots and tagging him with hard shots with right hands and left hooks.

The right hand that Golovkin hit Macklin with in the 2nd round should have been a knockdown as I said. It didn’t matter but it would have been nice to see Golovkin get credit for it.

We didn’t learn much about Golovkin’s true talent in this fight because Macklin was so easy to beat. He didn’t look like a real quality fighter. Golovkin needed someone better than this to give us a true picture of how good he is.
