Fury: Bring on David Haye; I want Britain’s best heavyweight!

haye002By Scott Gilfoid: Having just narrowly escaped getting knocked out by 210 pound heavyweight Steve Cunningham in his last fight, British heavyweight Tyson Fury (21-0, 15 KO’s) has decided not to fight a very tough unbeaten heavyweight contender Kubrat Pulev next.

Fury wants former WBA heavyweight champion David Haye (26-2, 24 KO’s) and he thinks he’s got the talent to beat him despite his dreadful performance against Cunningham in front of an American audience in New York last April.

Fury said to the dailystar.co.uk “Bring it on. David Haye is by far the best heavyweight in Britain so forget David Price…if I beat him I will be the best…I have no interest whatsoever in David Price.”

Who the heck has been asking Fury to fight Price? I think it’s been established that Price is out of the picture after getting exposed by 41-year-old Tony Thompson last February. Price has got problems of his own.

The last thing he needs is to start looking past his rematch with Thompson next month in Liverpool and end up getting brained again. I’d really hate to see Price dreaming of a fight against Fury and get blown out for a second time. Believe me, nobody is talking about a Fury-Price fight.

Both guys looked terrible in their last fights. I know Fury technically beat Cunningham by a 7th round TKO but you can really call that fight a loss for Fury because he was facing a weak, weak opponent and he almost got knocked out in the 2nd round. He was hurt in the 2nd and 3rd rounds. To me, that performance was so, so bad that you really got to count it as a loss.

Fury saying that Haye is the best heavyweight in Britain isn’t really saying much because the pickings are kind of slim right now. There’s only Fury, Price, Haye and Dereck Chisora and the Olympic Gold medalist Anthony Joshua who won three fights in the London Olympics by controversial decisions.

Haye-Fury is pretty much just a tune-up fight for Haye to try and get a rematch against IBF/IBO/WBA/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko or if Haye is really lucky, a fight against WBC heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko.
