By Scott Gilfoid: Despite all the talk from IBF/WBA super middleweight champion Carl Froch (31-2, 22 KO’s) about being willing to face the talented Andre Ward (26-0, 14 KO’s) in the UK, there’s been absolutely no contact from Froch or his promoter with the 29-year-old Ward to try and schedule a fight between them.
In other words, Froch has done a lot of talking in mentioning Ward’s name but he hasn’t made the move to make the fight a reality.
Ward told fighthype.com “There hasn’t been one phone call made that I’m aware of to try and generally schedule a rematch. I don’t think the man wants to fight me. And I’m not going to be dictated to.”
Ward doesn’t feel that he owes Froch a fight in the UK, and he’s not going to be told that this is what he has to do in order to make the fight happen.
Ward is okay with Froch and his promoter Eddie Hearn discussing a venue for the fight with him, but he’s not okay with Froch drawing a line in the sand ahead of time by saying that the rematch would have to take place in the UK.
Ward doesn’t feel that Froch has the cache to do that kind of talking given how he was beaten by Ward two years ago in the Super Six tournament.
Ward’s not impressed with the fact that Froch has two straps and he has only one. Ward doesn’t see Froch as on his level and rightly so. Those straps might as well be paper titles because everyone knows who the REAL champion is at 168 and that’s Ward, not Froch.
Ward says he’s going to do his thing and keep fighting and showing he’s the best fighter in the division. He’s not worried about Froch and feels he doesn’t need to fight him; it’s Froch who should feel like he needs Ward because he’s the one that was beaten by him.
If Froch is okay with getting beaten by Ward, then he can go ahead and keep fighting Mikkel Kessler as many times as Hearn can match them up, but he’ll not be seen as the #1 guy at 168 until he faces Ward again and proves that he can beat him. Ward sees himself as having a lot more time in his career than the 35-year-old Froch, so he’s not going to worry about a fighter that is clearly nearing the end of his career.
