De La Hoya: Mayweather isn’t invincible; Canelo could dethrone him

de la hoya2By Dan Ambrose: Oscar De La Hoya of Golden Boy Promotions isn’t coming right out and tipping his fighter WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (42-0-1, 30 KO’s) to beat Floyd Mayweather Jr. (44-0, 26 KO’s) on September 14th, but he sure is dropping a lot of hints about who he’s favoring in this fight.

A Canelo victory over Mayweather Jr. would be HUGE for Golden Boy, because it would give them a young fighter that they could turn into pay per view riches for the next 10 years before the competition catches up to him, making it too hard to maneuver him without him suffering defeats left and right.

De La Hoya said to Mlive.com “It’s not a secret Canelo is the fighter who can possibly dethrone Floyd. Nobody is unstoppable. Nobody is invincible. Mayweather knows this is a very difficult fight…so he better be in shape. One thing about Canelo is he’s just so mature for his age.”

De La Hoya sounds like an executive out of the movie Rollerball where they’re trying to get a player Jonathan E. to retire because he’s defeated the purpose of the game by being so much better than the other players.

De La Hoya says Mayweather isn’t invincible but he clearly is, and the fact that Golden Boy has dug up a fighter who arguably should be fighting as a middleweight now given that he’s fighting in the 170s now shows you the desperation to find someone that can beat Mayweather.

I just wonder what’ll happen when Mayweather beats Canelo soundly on September 14th. Will De La Hoya find a super middleweight or light heavyweight for Mayweather to fight so that they can get someone that can beat him? They may have to because Canelo is about to be exposed by Mayweather on September 14th, and De La Hoya is going to have to go back to the drawing board to find someone else.

It’s certainly not going to be Adrien Broner, and I don’t think De La Hoya will even go there because there’s not enough of an advantage that Broner would have. He wouldn’t out-weigh Mayweather by 20 pounds like Canelo likely will when they face each other at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.
