dawson2By Jim Dower: WBC light heavyweight champion Chad Dawson (31-3, 17 KO’s) made the mistake of coming out aggressive tonight against the hard hitting Adonis Stevenson (21-1, 18 KO’s) and it cost him big time by Dawson getting knocked out by a single left hand from Stevenson in the 1st round at the Bell Centre in Montreal, Canada.

Dawson was fighting more or less okay up to the point Stevenson nailed him with a big left hand shot. Once that shot landed, Dawson went down flat on his back on the canvas. He barely made it back to his feet but was on weak legs. The referee then looked him over and decided to stop the fight when he saw how hurt Dawson was.

Yuriorkis Gamboa (23-0, 16 KO’s) looked great tonight in defeating previously unbeaten Darley Perez (28-1, 19 KO’s) by a nice 12 round unanimous decision to win the WBA interim lightweight title. The final judges scores were 16-111, 116-111 and 115-112. Gamboa had too much speed for Perez, and he too experienced. Gamboa knocked Perez down in the 1st round.

Perez was way too cautious for his own good. He was cautious to the point where he was throwing next to nothing in the last half of the fight, and this allowed Gamboa to dominate even though he was clearly tiring in the last six rounds.

Former middleweight contender David Lemieux (29-2, 28 Ko’s) blew away novice Robert Swierzbinski (11-2, 3 KO’s) by a 1st round TKO. Lemieux knocked Swierzbinski down three times before the mismatch was halted.
