frampton21By Scott Gilfoid: Undefeated super bantamweight contender Carl Frampton (16-0, 11 KO’s) is facing fringe contender Fabian Oscar Orozco (20-2-2, 7 KO’s) in a backwards match-up on July 20th at the Wembley Arena, Wembley, in London, United Kingdom.

It’s a fight that really doesn’t make a lot of sense given that Frampton just finished facing and beating Kiko Martinez by a 9th round TKO last February, and now Frampton is facing Orozco, a fighter who was beaten by journeyman Miguel Leonardo Caceres (26-44-7, 7 KO’s).

I mean, if Orozco can’t even beat a guy with a record like 26-44-7, then why is Frampton facing Orozco, #12 IBF, #15 WBO, then? Heck, why not fight the journeyman that beat Orozco? If you’re going to go soft then you might as well go all the way.

Needless to say, Orozco’s resume is horribly inflated, as is his ranking and that’s pretty sad.

Frampton, #3 IBF, #7 WBA, #7 WBC, #14 WBO, seems to be getting angled for a shot against either WBC super bantamweight champion Victor Terrazas or IBF champion Jhonatan Romero. Those are the only champions that Frampton has a realistic chance of beating, and even with them I have some serious doubts about whether he can do it.

I do know that we’re not going to see Frampton in the ring against WBA/WBO super bantamweight champion Guillermo Rigondeaux because Frampton will never be ready for a fight like that because Rigondeaux is too talented and would school him if that fight were made. I won’t get made, believe me. Frampton will be steered towards safer waters.

Frampton needs to step it up a couple levels against somebody good because he can’t sit and wait guys out until they get old because there will younger fighters coming along and unless Frampton takes a shot now, then I can’t see him being able to just hang around as a fringe contender waiting for a shot at a title in the distant future.
