Canelo will need to increase his workrate for Mayweather bout

canelo3333By Dan Ambrose: If you watched any of WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez’s past fights you’ll no doubt have noticed that he fights as if he’s afraid to tire out. He’s very economical with his punches even when he’s got a guy in trouble. I used to think it was because he was looking for the perfect shot, but after noticing how gassed he’s looked in many of his fights, I now see it as stamina problem that could be a permanent issue for him.

On September 14th, Canelo will be fighting Floyd Mayweather Jr. in Las Vegas, Nevada and I think Canelo is going to have a lot of problems unless he’s able to throw a lot more punches than he’s done in past bouts.

I’ve said this before but I’ll say it again: Canelo should have lost to Austin Trout. Canelo got out-worked by Trout and out-landed, and he didn’t fight hard enough to deserve the victory. Against Mayweather, Canelo won’t get by with landing 10 punches in a round and still have the round given to you. I don’t see any judges giving Canelo rounds if he’s fighting only one minutes of the round and spending the rest of the time catching his breath because he’s gassed out.

If I’m Canelo’s trainer I’m having him work on his cardio the entire camp because that’s what needs more than anything. He needs to drop some weight to get closer to 160 from the 172 he fought last time and he needs to get in shape because he’s not going to beat a talented fighter like Mayweather fighting sporadically and having the judges give him rounds. There isn’t going to be open scoring for this fight, so Canelo going to have to work a lot harder if he wants to win. I don’t think he can without gassing out. If a shot fighter like Shane Mosley was able to frustrate and wear down Canelo just imagine what Mayweather will do to him on September 14th.
