Can Billion dollar Broner catch up to Mayweather?

broner6545By Allan Fox: WBA welterweight champion Adrien Broner (27-0, 22 KO’s) says to anyone that’s willing to listen that he’s the next big thing in boxing, and that he’s taking over for the sport. Just this morning, Broner said on his twitter “It’s not a mystery that I am taking over boxing.”

Broner says he’s going to be boxing’s first Billion dollar fighter. He patterns himself after Floyd Mayweather Jr., but he hasn’t shown the kind of talent as him thus far. It’s difficult to see a future where Broner will catch up and eventually surpass Mayweather while on his way to becoming the first Billion dollar athlete in boxing.

As things are now, the 23-year-old Broner has a lot of work ahead to become even a regular pay per view draw. He’s so far behind Mayweather that it’s almost to imagine him catching up to him.

There is a possibility that Broner can windup as the next big thing in the sport, but it’s not looking good right now judging from how he looked against Paulie Malignaggi last Saturday night, and based on the type of opposition that his promoters and adviser are putting him in with. Broner had all he could handle in beating Malignaggi by a 12 round split decision.

Broner is going to have to fight better guys like Keith Thurman, Marcos Maidana, Victor Ortiz, Danny Garcia, Lucas Matthysse, Devon Alexander and Lamont Peterson. Those are about the best fights that Broner can hope for right now. He doesn’t want to fight Mayweather Jr. and that would be Broner’s express trip to the top of the sport if he were to take that fight, but he doesn’t to do it.

That’s unfortunate because a fight with Mayweather would quickly get Broner to where he’s making big money if he were to win that fight. The problem is that Broner would likely be out of his league against Mayweather if that fight were to be made right now.

Broner wants to be a big star, but it seems that either his promoters at Golden Boy Promotions or his adviser Al Haymon aren’t putting him in the fights that he needs in order to make him the big star. You can’t make a star out of a fighter if he’s still being matched against the likes of Gavin Rees and Malignaggi like the way Broner is.
