Calzaghe gives Groves a chance to beat Froch

groves4534By Scott Gilfoid: Joe Calzaghe is giving unbeaten super middleweight contender George Groves (19-0, 15 KO’s) a chance of beating IBF/WBA super middleweight champion Carl Froch (31-2, 22 KO’s) if Froch were to ever agree to fight the 25-year-old Groves. Calzaghe thinks Groves could out-box the 35-year-old Froch if he fought smart.

Calzaghe doesn’t understand why Froch jumps on the case of some of the younger fighters that call him out for a fight.

Calzaghe said to Ringside Toe 2 Toe – “I think he [Groves] has a chance of beating Froch if he fights the right tactics…Froch can be out-boxed. I think he’s shown that. Whether he is good enough to out-box him I’m not too sure, but why can’t he call him out. He’d undefeated, Froch was in the same position calling me out all them years ago.”

I agree with Calzaghe here about Groves having a chance to beat Froch, but I give Groves a very very good chance of beating him. I’m not much of a fan of Groves, but I rate him as better than Froch and I think he’s got the speed, power and the boxing ability to beat Froch at this point.

Froch needs to get that fight over with because if he waits too long to fight Groves, he’ll be putting himself in a bad situation where he might be too old to be competitive.

I can understand why Froch would want to try and get another payday fight against Mikkel Kessler because he’s probably not going to make that kind of green fighting anyone else, but Froch needs to understand that he’s getting older and if he puts off the Groves fight for very much longer he’s going to be ensuring that he loses that fight.

If I was Froch’s manager I would keep him away from Groves on a permanent basis. I know Froch’s promoter Eddie Hearn doesn’t want to do that because he promotes Groves as well, and a win or even a close loss for Groves against Froch, would be huge for Groves’ career because he has so much time ahead of him with his career.

Hearn obviously would like to get the fight done sooner rather than later because the faster he makes the Groves-Froch fight the sooner Groves will be on his way to becoming a PPV attraction in the UK. However, Froch should steer away from that fight and look for other options because I see him losing.
