Broner open to facing Maidana if he gets past Malignaggi on June 22nd

broner45233By Allan Fox: Unbeaten Adrien Broner (26-0, 22 KO’s) isn’t ruling out a fight against #2 WBA Marcos Maidana (34-3, 31 KO’s) if Broner is able to snatch the WBA welterweight title from champion Paulie Malignaggi (32-4, 7 KO’s) in their fight next Saturday, June 22nd at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.

The general consensus is with the boxing public that Broner, if he beats the light hitting Malignaggi, will immediately vacate the WBA title rather than having to defend the belt against dangerous punchers Maidana, Keith Thurman and Diego Chaves.

Any one of those fighters could quickly unseat the 23-year-old Broner as the champion if given a chance and it’s likely that Broner’s promoters at Golden Boy Promotions won’t let that happen by taking Broner back down into safer waters at 135.

Even 140 is probably too dangerous for Broner, because it’s filled with murderous punchers Lucas Matthysse and Danny Garcia and the clever Amir Khan. Those guys are a perhaps a step too far for Broner.

Broner said in the telephone conference call last week when asked if he’d fight Maidana: “Everybody knows what Maidana brings to the table…if the best fight for Adrien Broner after this fight is Maidana then Maidana will then get it.”

If Broner is serious wanting to hold onto his WBA title then Maidana is going to have to be someone that he faces sooner or later. Broner will only be able to dodge that fight for so long before the World Boxing Association forces the issue by making Maidana the mandatory challenger. Broner would then have to make the decision of whether to vacate or defend the title against the hard Argentinian slugger.

The one fighter that Broner refuses to fight is his buddy Floyd Mayweather Jr. When questioned during the conference call whether he’d be open to fighting Mayweather Jr. in the near future, Broner said “Next question.” This seemed to upset the person asking the question because he asked it again, and Broner would only say “Next question.” So it seems that there are some fighters that Broner isn’t willing to fight. You have to wonder whether Maidana, Thurman and Chaves will also be on the “Next question” list when people ask Broner in the future whether he’ll fight any of them.
