Broner: If I don’t KO Paulie, then he’s getting battered; it’s cool

broner454By Allan Fox: Undefeated Adrien Broner (26-0, 22 KO’s) doesn’t seem to care much how he beats WBA welterweight champion Paulie Malignaggi (32-4, 7 KO’s) on June 22nd just as long as he beats him in their fight at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.

Broner said to Showtime “If I knock him out, that’s cool. If I don’t, he will get battered and bruised. He’s another stepping stone to my legacy.”

The real test to Broner’s legacy isn’t the Malignaggi fight, because that seems like a prime example of Golden Boy Promotions picking out the perfect opponent for Broner to fight at 147. The rest test is what Broner does AFTER he beats Malignaggi.

Does Broner vacate the WBA title to avoid the pressure that would be immediately on him to fight #2 WBA Marcos Maidana and #4 WBA Keith Thurman. Broner might be able to avoid facing one of those guys in for a little while, but not too long. Eventually, Broner would be expected to face one of those guys and he’d end up looking really, really bad if he chooses to vacate his title to move back down to safer waters at 135, where he wouldn’t be facing punchers like Thurman and Maidana.

Broner probably will batter Malignaggi on June 22nd until the fight is stopped. If it doesn’t get stopped, then Broner will definitely batter Malignaggi and leave him a bloody and/or swollen mess. If Amir Khan and Ricky Hatton were able to stop Malignaggi then Broner will definitely be able to do the same thing because he’s a bigger puncher than those guys are.

Malignaggi’s only real chance in this fight is to run, jab and keep his head as far away from Broner’s punches as possible. Hopefully, Malignaggi has been working on how to pull away from punches because he’s going to need to be able to do this to keep from getting his flush with big shots.
