Bellew willing to travel to face Adonis Stevenson

stevenson343By Scott Gilfoid: #1 WBC, Tony Bellew (20-1, 12 KO’s) got his wish with Adonis Stevenson (21-1, 18 KO’s) defeating WBC light heavyweight champion Chad Dawson last Saturday night. Bellew felt that he matched up better against the slugger Stevenson than he would against the pure boxer Dawson, and now he’s going to be able to see if his theory is correct. Bellew says he’s willing to travel to take the fight with Stevenson.

Bellew said to Sky Sports “I can’t wait to meet him (Stevenson) – he won’t have to look for me and I won’t have to look for him…I’ll go to his backyard as I’ve said – no problem…I’ll go anywhere for the fight.”

I hate to say it but Bellew doesn’t stand a chance in this fight. If he thinks he had it bad in going life and death with Isaac Chilemba in their two back to back fights this year, just wait and see what he’ll have to face when a much faster, much stronger and much tougher Stevenson faces him. It’s going to be a nightmare for Bellew because he’s so much slower than Stevenson and he’s so wide open to his big power shots.

Bellew has a pretty good chin, so I don’t think he’s going to fold in one round like Dawson did, but I don’t see Bellew being able to go more than 5 or 6 rounds, and only then if he chooses to run to avoid Stevenson’s fast shots.

This is a really bad match-up for Bellew. Stevenson is just too talented. We saw that last Saturday night. Stevenson landed exactly three shots and every one of them was blistering fast and incredibly punches that Dawson never saw coming until they landed. Bellew will be like a punching dummy against Stevenson and I don’t like his chances being able to take too many of his shots. If a fighter like Ovil McKenzie was able to put Bellew down again and again, just imagine what a much better fighter like Stevenson will do to him.

A better match-up for Bellew would be for him to take on someone like WBA light heavyweight champion Beibut Shumenov. I think that’s a winnable fight for Bellew because Shumenov hasn’t been all that active and he’s not looked the greatest in any of his recent fights. If Bellew is smart, he’ll choose not to fight Stevenson and instead focus on going after Shumenov.
