gamboa545By Sevak Sarkisian: On Saturday June 8th Yuriorkis Gamboa will be making his return to the ring at the Bell Center in Montreal. It will be televised live on HBO as a double header along with the Chad Dawson v Adonis Stevenson fight. Gamboa will be facing Darley Perez who sports an impressive record of 28-0 with 19 KO’s from Colombia.

Gamboa, as many fans know is also an undefeated fighter with an impressive record of 22-0 with 16 KO’s. He holds quality wins over some quality fighters like Orlando Salido, Daniel Ponce De Leon, and Michael Farenas.

Gamboa is athletically very gifted and possesses quick hand speed. He also carries good punching power in both hands. However, Gamboa has always seemed to be a little suspect in the chin having been knocked down and wobbled numerous times throughout his career. He has done his best work in the 126lb weight class.

He moved up in weight last time he fought against Farenas and was visibly hurt and had trouble towards the end of the fight. Gamboa is only 5’5 ½ in height and fighting above the featherweight limit of 126 pounds is not in his best interest.

Darley Perez on the other hand is a lightweight and will enjoy an inch and a half height advantage and will be the bigger man in the ring that night. However, Perez hasn’t fought quality opponents throughout his career and Gamboa will undoubtedly be showing him a few things he’s never seen before.

Attributes like skill, speed, power and athleticism are things Gamboa will present against Perez. Perez does not have quick hands but he does have some decent power possessing a 68 percent knockout ratio. Perez will also be the bigger man in the ring that night and he should look to take advantage of that by applying a lot of pressure and fight like he’s the bigger man.

If Perez applies consistent pressure and comes forward with the jab he can make this fight interesting. In my humble opinion, this fight will be taking place two weight classes above Gamboa’s optimal weight. Perez may not be a world class fighter, but he is no slouch and if he applies the right tactics like Tyson Fury did against Cunningham, it can be a good fight.
