Who’s next for Floyd Mayweather Jr?

floyd#22By Gerardo Granados: After his dominant performance against the WBC welterweight mandatory challenger Robert Guerrero last Saturday night there´s only five fights left in the multimillion dollar contract for Floyd Mayweather Jr., and the question to ask is who´s next in line for “Money”? Don´t expect him to fight any dangerous contender but instead a big name that can sale on pay per view.

On times the rankings make no sense but it is not Mayweather Jr´s fault to have defended his WBC welterweight strap against little known Ghost Guerrero. It is not possible to give a definitive list because if a fighter wins or lose he can secure or lost his chance of a big payday. Maybe fame and a big fan base will be decisive to land a fight against Floyd.

Amir Khan still has a big fan base, and the rumors started to flow and you could bet that he is on the list. Khan doesn’t represent a big risk the fight might sell well.

Austin Trout – Former WBA light middleweight belt holder Austin Trout has received more attention for his loss to Saul Alvarez than his victory against Miguel Cotto. Even he is a natural light middleweight, but he lacks power and had trouble against Canelo´s defense, so he could be tailor made for Floyd.

Juan Manuel Marquez – How about a rematch between Marquez and Mayweather? The weight was a major issue when they fought in 2009. Only if Marquez wins the WBO welterweight belt and after his knock out win against Manny Pacquiao the fight could interest fans. If Tim Bradley manages to defeat Juan Manuel Marquez, he could end fighting Floyd. Although he doesn’t have a big fan base the fight could be easy to promote.

Manny Pacquiao – the Pacquiao-Mayweather dream fight can still brake sale records but the negotiations could end as always on a dead end.

Adrien Broner – If “the problem” defeats WBA welterweight champion Paul Malignaggi next month, he could become a serious candidate. “The old lion vs the young lion”. If Paul Malignaggi defeats Broner, he could also end up in line for Floyd. Maybe not a major threat but definitely a better fight than Guerrero´s.

Danny Garcia is the best light welterweight in the division right now, and has power but he also might be tailor made for Floyd. Not the less the fight could sell well. Lamont Peterson and Lucas Matthysse have a real small fan base and the promotion could be a tough job.

Miguel Cotto A rematch between Mayweather and Cotto could end up in good fight. If Cotto fights Canelo in September he would risk to lose but if he wins he could regain his status as the best light middleweight.

Maybe the only big name that is also a threat for Floyd is Saul Canelo Alvarez. The kid has skills and also the size advantage. Nonetheless if it makes money it makes sense and this fight could sell really good. Maybe this is his last fight of the contract.

Only four names left. Looks like an easy choice to make but when the television ratings matter the most then it becomes more complicated. Have the reader guess the names yet?
