Ward: I don’t have to fight Froch in the UK; he has to fight here in the U.S

ward46By Scott Gilfoid: Well, it looks like if IBF super middleweight champion Carl Froch ever wants to try and avenge his loss to WBA super middleweight champion Andre Ward (26-0, 14 KO’s), he’s going to have to come to the USA to try and get the job done because Ward doesn’t see the point of him traveling to the UK to face a guy that he already licked two years ago in the Super Six tournament.

The way Ward sees it, Froch is the one that has something to prove, not him.

Ward said to the BBC Sport “The reality is that I don’t have to fight in the UK to become a star in the world of boxing, but Froch has to come and stake his claim in the United States in order to be recognized domestically and worldwide.”

This is so true, Mr. Ward. I agree with you 100 percent. People in the U.S don’t have a clue who Froch is aside from hardcore boxing fans. You could probably spend the day walking around the average city in the U.S. asking people if they’d ever heard of Froch, and you’d be lucky if you found one person who would say yes.

The truth is nobody has head of Froch in the U.S, and unless he steps up to the plate and flies over to the U.S to try and avenge his defeat, it’s going to stay that way.

It’s almost beneath Ward to have to travel to the UK to fight Froch. That’s the reverse of how things are traditionally played out after a fighter has been beaten. It’s the guy that was beaten who has to do whatever he can to try and get the rematch because he’s the one, or least he should be the one, that wants to avenge the defeat.

Somehow I don’t see Froch showing a lot of initiative to want to avenge his loss to Ward. I know he’s been bellyaching about wanting to avenge his loss to Kessler, but for some reason he’s been strangely silent about his loss to Ward. Now way is that?

Froch’s fans think that Ward owes Froch a fight in the UK because of Froch fighting Ward in the United States in 2011. However, that fight didn’t count because it wasn’t a hometown advantage for Ward.

The fight took place in Atlantic City, New Jersey, and that’s roughly 3000 miles from Bay Area where Ward lives in Oakland, California. The U.S is so big that you can be a star in one city like Oakland and be a total stranger in another city like Atlantic City. That fight wasn’t a hometown fight for Ward, so Froch doesn’t get a rematch in the UK because he still hasn’t fought Ward in his home city of Oakland, California.
