martirosyan45By Sevak Sarkisian: Jr. Middleweight contender Vanes Martirosyan will be making his return to the ring on June 15th at the American Airlines Center in Dallas Texas against journeyman Ryan Davis. This will be Martirosyan’s first fight after his draw with Erislandy Lara on HBO in November of last year.

As most fight fans already know, Martirosyan was and Olympian in Athens Greece and turned pro in 2005. In the beginning of his career Top Rank was bringing him up slowly. However, since 2009 Vanes has stepped up his level of opposition by facing and defeating guys like Kassim Ouma, Joe Greene, Saul Roman, and Erislandy Lara. Martirosyan is know a top ten Jr. Middleweight and should be within the reach of a title shot very soon. Martirosyan has just signed a new managerial contract with Cameron Dunkin who always does a good job with getting his clients the kinds of fights they want. So hopefully that will open some doors for Vanes.

Martirosyan has decent hand speed and power and he knows how to use the ring very well. He also has a good amateur background to fall back on. However, Martirosyan has been dropped a few times throughout his career but fortunately possesses the heart and grit to get back up regroup and win the fight. He is a fun fighter to watch and is what I would categorize as an offensive minded boxer puncher. My only knock on Vanes is the fact that sometimes he doesn’t move his head enough to slip punches and becomes very suseptable to eating straight punches. His head seems to be a stationary target for his opponents and I hope he and his coaches get that problem fixed before he faces another top ten guy with some punching power. With all that said, I believe the kid has done enough to fight for a world title and I hope he gets a chance to do so in the near future.

Ryan Davis on the other hand is a c level fighter that has nothing to offer against a fighter like Vanes Martirosyan. I’ve only seen him fight one time but it is clear he doesn’t belong in the ring with Vanes and I hope it will be the last time Martirosyan is matched up with an opponent like this. I expect for him to make easy work out of the much smaller and lesser talented Davis.
