Time for a change in how fights are made?

By Sean David: At one time a the best in each division fought each other many times more than once, now this is more of a musing than an article but surely we have all had our fill of promoters and fighters dictating who they want to step in the ring with.

The real excitement of boxing is the fact anything can and does/used to happen. For every fight that turns out great there are ten that are at best mediocre, what makes this worse is that many of the mediocre fights feature the superstars of today and the undercards and lesser known fights prove to be much more thrilling.

Too many belts and too many ludicrously silly titles amongst the organizations do not help the matter either. There are more people calling themselves champ this champ that than a night playing fight night on the ps3! Then the organizations have decide to have a “part time, till something better comes along, interim, tin foil, rub with brasso till we can get him a real belt, semi popular, better than everyone apart from the top 3. Hey, but it’s a belt championship”.

Boxing as is well documented is struggling at times to maintain it’s popularity, and part of this is the lack of exciting fights and predictable statements. I’m sick of hearing why so and so wont fight so and so. The top ten in any division should be fighting to establish the best.

The ones below that ranking should be fighting in rankings of ten to get to the next tier of fighters and more so once a champion is made why the hell should him or his money hungry promotion team choose the fight. The organizations need to sit down and come up with a way to inject life into the sport and not drain it dry out of greed!

All fighters should be tested many times and all before and after a fight and the promoters should be forced to make agreeable deals to televise fights. Simply take it in #****”” turns and then every network can get involved. Obviously this will never happen and it would take a smarter man than me to do the detail, but just imagine we wouldn’t need to have dream fights. We would have perhaps another golden era of boxing with the ups downs and the best against the best.
