Schaefer to start working on Canelo-Mayweather fight this week

floyd#31By Dan Ambrose: Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer says he’s going to be starting the wheels in motion this week for a September 14th fight between his fighter WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (42-0-1, 30 KO’s) and Floyd Mayweather Jr. (44-0, 26 KO’s), even though Mayweather hasn’t asked him too. Schaefer wants the fight for Canelo and Golden Boy.

Schaefer told Steve Kim at Maxboxing.com “I’ll be meeting this week with Floyd’s adviser and we will start having conversations. I know that Floyd is the kind of fighter who doesn’t turn down anyone. He’s always fought anyone and everyone and I know that with Canelo, that’s the fight he really wants.”

So it looks like Schaefer is working on this without any encouragement from Mayweather. All I can say is I hope Schaefer doesn’t invest too much time into it because he could end up with nothing to show for it.

Mayweather already made it pretty clear to everyone that he has zero interest in fighting the much heavier Canelo in September. He already said my weight is closer to 140 than it is 154, and that his age is closer to 40 than it is 21. If that’s not a huge hint that he doesn’t want the fight with the much heavier Canelo than I don’t know what is.

Instead of Schaefer wasting his time trying to set up a fight between Canelo and Mayweather, he should be looking to match Canelo with guys closer to his actual weight like Andre Ward, Carl Froch, Mikkel Kessler, Chad Dawson, Nathan Cleverly, Gennedy Golovkin, Julio Cesar Chavez Jr, and Sergio Martinez. Those guys are much closer to Canelo’s weight of 170+ than the 150 lb. Mayweather is.

The fighters Schaefer needs to be looking to put Mayeather in with for September is guys like Devon Alexander, Danny Garcia, Lucas Matthysse, Keith Thurman and Amir Khan. Those are a fine bunch of guys around the same weight as Mayweather, and he won’t have to worry about fighting someone potential 17 to 22 pounds heavier than him like he would be if he fought Canelo.
