Schaefer insists he’s making progress with Mayweather-Canelo negotiations

canelo4543By Dan Ambrose: Dan Rafael reports that Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer that he’s making good progress on a fight between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, and that the talk of the fight taking place at 147 or a catchweight is totally incorrect.

Rafael said on his twitter: “Schaefer: All good, working on the fight. So far so good. It’s amazing how some of these other (sites) are spreading all these wrong stories. Schaefer emailed me, said as he works on Floyd-Canelo reports Floyd insists ‘on 147 & Canelo would be OK with a catch weight, it’s all BS.’”

The way Schaefer is describing his negotiations it almost sounds like Mayweather will be agreeing to fight Canelo at 154 instead of having the 22-year-old, less experienced fighter come down in weight to fight him at 147. That makes a lot more sense considering that Canelo will be sporting a huge weight advantage if Mayweather agrees to fight him at 154.

If Mayweather does that then he’s asking for trouble because Canelo will come into the fight with a tremendous weight advantage. But of course Canelo’s weight advantage would be his only chance in winning because if both fighters are at the same weight or even close to the same weight, Mayweather will easily beat Canelo.

The only chance Canelo has in winning this fight is by having a huge 20 pound weight advantage, and if Mayweather agrees to fight him at 154, then he’ll have that weight advantage unless Mayweather is wise enough to have it written in the contract that Canelo can’t come into the fight more than 156.

That weight would still give Canelo a hefty 10 pound weight advantage over Mayweather, who came into his last fight against Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero at 146 after rehydrating.

If Mayweather doesn’t put a rehydration limit in the contract then Canelo will likely balloon up to 172 and enjoy a 26 pound weight advantage. That’s just way too much weight for Mayweather to be dealing with, as it would be way too much weight for Canelo to handle if he fought a 198 pound cruiserweight.

I can’t picture Canelo getting in the ring with the WBO cruiserweight champion Marco Huck because he’d smash Canelo to bits with a 26 pound weight advantage.
