Ricky Burns’ trainer: Ricky would school Broner at 135 or 140

burns4534By Scott Gilfoid: WBO lightweight champion Ricky Burns had had at least two chances to fight WBC lightweight champion Adrien Broner and both times he’s chosen not to take the fight with him. Burns’ trainer Billy Nelson says he’s hoping that Broner will move back down in weight to fight Burns in the near future, although he says Burns would move up to 140 to fight him if the opportunity presented itself to him.

Nelson said to Matchroom Sport: “Adrien Broner. I’d love him to come down. Even at 140. I believe Ricky would school him. He’s [Burns] got four or five fights left at lightweight before he moves up to light welterweight.”

I think it’s not even worth Broner’s time and effort to try and get another fight with Burns because he’s already tried and ended up with nothing. The old saying “Fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice, shame on me.” I think Burns doesn’t want any part of an actual fight with Broner. I just see him or his trainer name dropping to get attention but then not taking the fight if Broner were to offer it.

Broner has much bigger things in front of him now rather than wasting his time fighting a guy in the lightweight division that few American boxing fans have ever heard of before. If Showtime were to televise a Broner vs. Burns fight, I think it would get bad ratings and put boxing fans to sleep, especially if Burns chose to hold Broner all night long to get him getting brained by him.

Burns fights this Saturday night against his #1 WBO challenger Jose Gonzalez in Glasgow, Scotland in a fight that you can really call a toss-up. Gonzalez is the biggest puncher of Burns’ career and he’s got the skills, size and talent to win this fight by knockout. Burns has been winning a lot of his recent fights on size alone, but against the 5’10” Gonzalez, he’ll be staring him right in the eye instead of towering over him like he’d done lately.
