Prizefighters and Roman Gladiators

By Gerardo Granados: The people´s taste is on times very selective but there´s no doubt that people´s taste is prone to watch violence; it is not new and the reader knows it.

Who wouldn’t enjoy the controlled violence that happens inside that ring? How many times have you find relief from your tensions while watching a good fight? What can get you distracted from your dairy duties or problems better than a great fight? Is it true that you can get relaxed after seen a great fight?

After all to fight is a natural born skill and it won’t matter if you deny it a thousand times because it won’t make it a lie.

Once upon a time, through out the Roman Empire the gladiators would battle to death and the people would fill the arenas to watch them fight. The Emperors knew it and also liked to watch so the gladiators could not be missed from the regular program at any major festivity.

Now the prize fighters get to entertain millions. Not just the ones who attend live and fill the arenas, not just the ones who purchase the pay per view or watch on open broadcast; also the internet phenomena makes it a global show that brings joy and distraction to the masses.

Maybe the controversial fight judge ruling brings suspicion of a hoax but certainly in the past the gladiators had no need to leave the decision to the judges. It might be so evident that we all lose the ability to see it. It has been happening for so long that we don’t notice the time that has elapsed. The sensation is as intense as at the beginning but now it reaches more people and the result is the same, to bring distraction and joy to the people.

Technology has evolved since the Romans ruled the ancient world but modern citizens still enjoy a good fight. Until when will this hipnotic distraction cease having effect on the masses? A friend of mine believes it has an everlasting effect and so do I, but what about you?
