My problem with The latest Ring’s P4P List

broner68By Duke Pahulu: The Ring just posted their latest P4P list. The top three of Mayweather, Ward and Marquez are solid picks. I have a problem with the rest of the list. I thought the pound for pound list was created to put a spotlight to the divisions below heavyweight.

I don’t know why they keep putting heavies on the list. Wlad is a great fighter but being the Heavyweight Champion should be good enough. Abner Mares had a great win against Daniel Ponce de Leon but he shouldn’t be this high up the list. You can say that he has titles at three divisions but he was the man at only 118. Its not as though Mares just beat the featherweight champ in Mikey Garcia. Number six has Adrien Broner.

Broner only has one great win in his career with Antonio Demarco. The rest including Paulie are not great wins. I believe he’s on the list more because of the hype rather than his resume. People believe he’s the next Floyd Mayweather but Floyd did way more at 130 and 135. Number seven is Sergio Martinez.

I believe Martinez belongs at number four. Martin Murray was a real threat considering his showing against Felix Strum. And just like another guy who gave Strum a tough fight in Matthew Macklin, Murray gave Martinez a tough bout. One bad outing in a win drops Martinez while the Bradley win over Pacquiao did nothing on Pacquiao’s standing on this list? The Ring should be more consistant with their criteria. The next guy on the list is Manny Pacquiao. I don’t have a problem with this.

Pacquiao had a great run before the third Marquez bout and we should remember that Pacquiao looked like him old self in the fourth bout before the KO. The ninth guy on the list is Timothy Bradley. I believe Bradley should be up on this list. Yes, Bradley looked vulnerable in his last outing but who has the will to match this man?

What other fighter can throw punches while basically knocked out on his feet and in the next round have the IQ to box the man from the outside? I’ve been high on Bradley since his underrated run at 140 and he’ll surprise the skeptics in his next bout against Marquez. The last guy on the list is Saul Alvarez. This is another forced entry to exploit an unproven star.

Canelo just fought his first legit 154 challenger. His record before Trout was full of washed up welterweights. Even though the judges had Canelo winning away, the Trout bout was a closer fight where Canelo didn’t look like the wrecking ball we all became to know. That one fight isn’t a good enough reason to put him on this list.

My P4P list

1. Floyd Mayweather
2. Andre Ward.
3. Juan Manuel Marquez
4. Sergio Martinez
5. Timothy Bradley
6. Abner Mares
7. Carl Froch
8. Manny Pacquiao
9. Nonito Donaire
10. Danny Garcia.

I believe Carl Froch is highly underrated. The man has the best resume at 168. When you go through the best class that the 168 has had, It’s understandable to lose a couple of bouts.

Nonito Donaire still belongs on this list. The Rigodeaux loss doesn’t erase the great work he has done since the Darchinyan KO. I don’t know why Danny Garcia doesn’t get any love on the P4P list but less accomplished fighters such as Broner and Canelo do. I guess being a star makes people blind to the facts.
