McDonnell: Ceja is smaller than I thought he’d be

mcdonnell11By Scott Gilfoid: British bantamweight Jaime McDonnell (20-2-1, 9 KO’s) thinks he’s got an easy mark tonight in unbeaten Mexican warrior Julio Ceja (24-0, 22 KO’s) just because the 5’5 ½” Ceja is 2 ½” inches shorter than him. The 5’8” McDonnell says he’s now more than ever certain that he’ll beat the 20-year-old Ceja tonight after standing next to him and looking at the height difference between himself and him.

Ceja and McDonnell will be fighting for the vacant IBF bantamweight title tonight at the Keepmoat Stadium, in Doncaster, UK.

McDonnell said to Sky “I knew I was going to beat Ceja before, but now that I’ve seen how short he is, I know I’m going to win now.”

I think McDonnell is going to be in for big disappointment to night when he finds himself getting scooped up off the canvas by his trainer or referee after he gets knocked out. McDonnell may be the taller guy, but he doesn’t have the chin or the power to stand in there against the powerful Ceja.

The 27-year-old McDonnell likes to trade with his opponents and that’s going to suit Ceja just fine because he does really well against guys that look to slug with him. I doubt McDonnell will have the discipline to back off and box even if it’s clear early on that he’s in deep in this fight.

McDonnell is one of those types of fighter that only has one way of fighting and that’s to go right after his opponents and look to tear them apart. I don’t fault the guy for fighting like that.

I mean, if you look at the god awful opposition McDonnell has been in with, then how could you blame him for punching with them. But tonight things are going to be dramatically different due to McDonnell being in with his first real puncher in facing Ceja, and he’s not going to have sense enough to back off when he starts taking heavy shots from him.

Normally fighters are conditioned early on to back away from guys that can hurt them with huge shots by them having faced a big puncher earlier in their careers, but with McDonnell he’s had so many weak punchers that he’s not been conditioned yet to avoid trading. He doesn’t know what he’s getting himself into tonight because he’s had nothing to prepare him for a fighter like Ceja.
Predition: Ceja by brutal 5th round knockout over McDonnell
