Mayweather – The Final Five

mayweather4532By Nayal Khan: With Floyd Mayweather Jr’s Showtime/CBS 6-fight contract already underway with a bang, here’s a closer look at the likely 5 remaining opponents:

Next fight for Sept ’13 – is likely to be a rematch with Miguel Cotto. It’s next to impossible for Saul “Canelo” Alvarez to get the fight and especially after throwing a hissy fit in refusing to take part in the Mayweather – Robert Guerrero undercard. I would expect Canelo to be sidelined until 2015 i.e. the back end of Mayweather’s 6 fight commitment. It is also impossible for any fights to happen with Top Rank’s fighters for obvious reasons that include Showtime/ HBO and Golden Boy/ Top Rank rivalry… so bye bye Tim Bradley and Manny Pacquiao (for now).

It is unlikely we’ll see any of the top 140lb guys moving up because of the mini-tournament going on…. Which leaves Amir Khan as a final possibility…. But Golden Boy realizes having Khan take on Devon Alexander in December for the IBF 147lb strap will make a Mayweather-Khan fight in May 2014 a great deal more valuable.

Mayweather likes to fight on Mexican holidays, but without any credible Mexican fighters (except Canelo) out there, it seems logical for Mayweather to take on Khan with his fairly strong British backing on May 2014. By the end of 2014, I think it is fair to say Mayweather will take on Danny Garcia. I think Garcia will win the mini-tournament at 140lb later this year, and then will move up to 147lb early 2014 for a tune-up fight before having all the right credentials in place for a Mayweather showdown later that year. Assuming all goes to plan, Garcia will be undefeated, undisputed 140lb Champion, young, strong and apparently will all the tools to do a job on Mayweather.

By the end of 2014 – Pacquaio’s contract expires with Top Rank (Dec 31st 2014). I highly doubt Pacman will renew it… in fact, I think we’re seeing all the signs of a contract renewal not happening, with Michael Koncz (Pacquiao’s manager) increasingly becoming more vocal about Pacman being the only fighter capable of beating Mayweather and that they’re willing to take the drug tests and take 60-40 purse split…. Koncz seems to be talking like a promoter, not sure what ‘ol man Bob Arum has to say about that. In any case, Pacquiao is done – period. With his arch-nemisis Mayweather putting in the final touches to his career, Pacquaio has no option other than to do the same – after all he hasn’t got it anymore, he’s aged overnight and cant bang with the up and coming young guns any longer. Mayweather-Paquiao will happen in May 2015 and will likely be amongst the highest grossing fights ever in the history of boxing….. By year end…. Mayweather will now take on Canelo – but on Mayweather’s terms – Canelo will need to drop down to 147lb plus a rehydration limit of 160lbs.

Once the dust settles and all of us boxing fans look back at what has truly been an illustrious career.

Mayweather’s record will stand at 49-0….. Knowing Money May the way we do, I don’t think Floyd will like the idea of being 1 fight shy from the big 50…. Mayweather will not officially retire… Showtime will offer Mayweather a through-the-roof 1-fight contract – and we’ll see Mayweather back for a final fight and the right to leave the game with a strong and undefeated fight record.
