Mayweather Sr. not impressed with Matthysse

matthysse4By Dan Ambrose: If WBC interim light welterweight champion Lucas Matthysse (34-2, 32 KO’s) can get past WBA/WBC light welterweight champion Danny Garcia (26-0, 16 KO’s) in their proposed fight on September 7th, Matthysse could wind up facing WBC welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. (44-0, 26 KO’s) in 2014.

Matthysse, a Golden Boy Promotions fighter, would be high on the list of potential opponents for Mayweather just by the virtue of Matthysse having cleaned out the 140 lb. division of some of the top fighters.

However, Mayweather’s father Floyd Mayweather Sr. isn’t all that impressed with Matthysse apart from admiring his power. Mayweather Sr. does like Matthysse’s power, but he doesn’t see him as having great skills to go along with that power.

Mayweather Sr. told hustleboss.com “He’s [Matthysse] a guy that just throws hard punches. He’s not a skillful fighter. He’s a banger and I didn’t see nothing that impressed me about him but his power. He’s not an elite fighter.”

Mayweather Sr. saw Matthysse’s 3rd round knockout victory of Lamont Peterson this month, and he feels that Peterson didn’t use the advantages that he had, namely his height and reach advantage.

Mayweather Sr. says he would have had Peterson staying on the outside and using his jab to keep Matthysse from getting in range to throw his big power shots. He thinks the fight would have been different had Peterson used his jab.

As far as how Matthysse would do against Mayweather Jr., Floyd Sr. says “Floyd would take a lot of things away from him and then deliver what he got to deliver.”

Mayweather Sr. feels that Floyd Jr. would keep Matthysse from landing his big power shots by jabbing, hooking, throwing right hands down the middle and watching out for his big shots.

There’s no question that it would be a tough fight for Matthysse because he looked uncomfortable in the 1st round against Peterson when he was boxing him and making him miss. Peterson didn’t stick to this game plan in the 2nd round and that’s how he got hurt.

Mayweather would very likely keep moving, jabbing and not letting Matthysse get close enough to throw his big power shots.
