By Allan Fox: With the rumors floating around that Floyd Mayweather Jr’s pay per view totals for his fight against Robert Guerrero being far less than projected for their pay per view bout last Saturday night on Showtime, it might be in Mayweather’s best interest to give one last attempt at putting together a fight between him and Manny Pacquiao for early 2014, before Pacquiao gets beaten again.
Just by arranging the fight with Pacquiao for next year, Mayweather will bump up his next fight’s PPV totals against whoever they pick out in September.
Having the specter of a Pacquiao fight has a way of raising Mayweather’s PPV numbers, as well as Pacquiao’s. Those two fighters need to work it out somehow and see that it’s in their own best interest to try and make the fight happen, if not for the fans then for themselves and their promotional companies.
The only things that could potentially mess things up for a fight between them is the purse split and drug testing. Mayweather feels Pacquiao isn’t worthy of getting a 50-50 deal, and he wants him to just accept a lump sum of $40 million for the fight. That’s a lot of money, but I don’t think it’s something that Pacquiao will ever agree to.
Pacquiao said no to the $40 million, even though it would have been the biggest payday of his career. I doubt that he’s going to change his mind about it now.
A Pacquiao-Mayweather fight not ever be anything close to what it could have been had they made the fight happen in 2010 when the two were fighting at a high level, but I can see the fight bringing in at least 1.6 million PPV buys if it were made fight now. Had they made the fight in 2010, it likely would have drawn over 2 million buys. Pacquiao’s two losses since then in addition to Mayweather’s frequent long absences from the ring have hurt the interest in the fight.
