Mayweather-Khan & Canelo-Cotto would be perfect for September 14th

floyd#91By Dan Ambrose: Instead of Floyd Mayweather Jr. facing WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez on September 14th in a fight that most casual boxing fans wouldn’t appreciate because they’ve never heard of Canelo before, Mayweather and Showtime should instead use the date for a double-header of Mayweather facing Amir Khan in the UK in London, and Canelo battling Miguel Cotto in Las Vegas, Nevada without open scoring to mess it up like Canelo’s last fight with Austin Trout.

I think this is the best possible scenario that could be put together by Golden Boy. The winner of the two fights would then face each other on the Mexican holiday Cinco de Mayo in 2014.

I know Golden Boy wants to have Khan face the winner of this Saturday’s match-up between Lee Purdy and Devon Alexander, but that might not be a good idea because I don’t think Khan can beat Alexander. Golden Boy needs to skip that fight and just go straight to Mayweather-Khan in the UK. Believe me, if Golden makes the mistake of letting Khan fight Alexander this year, they’re going to be sorry they did it because Khan can’t beat Alexander, and think he ever could.

Golden Boy needs to cash out with Khan while they can because if they put him in with Alexander, Danny Garcia, Lucas Matthysse or Lamont Peterson, he loses to all of them without bringing in a lot of money.

As for Canelo, he needs a win over the old lion Cotto to gain some credibility with boxing fans because he’s still an unknown in the U.S and the casual fans that did see him fight Austin Trout last month weren’t impressed with him, the scoring of the fight, and the open scoring.

I know Canelo’s diehard fans thought Canelo put in the best performance of all time, but if you look at his performance from a neutral person’s perspective, you saw a tired young guy, using the inflated scores the judges were giving him as an excuse to get badly needed rest breaks and doing as little as possible to get a win.

It was awful to look at Canelo’s performance because he fought like an old fighter nearing 40 rather than 22-year-old and the scoring of the fight was laughable. It was hard to take the fight seriously after seeing the scores the judges gave Canelo.

Canelo needs a good win over Cotto and without the open scoring, and without Texas for him to be looked at as a serious opponent for Mayweather.

The winner of the Canelo-Cotto and Mayweather-Khan fight then can fight in on May 4th next year in a fight that should take place at welterweight with a rehydration limit of 154 to keep Mayweather from being outweighed by 20 pounds.
