002MayweathervsGuerreroIMG_14171By Dan Ambrose: WBC welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. and his father Floyd Sr. are saying there are several names they’re considering for his next fight in September.

They’re not saying who the guys are, but it does like WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez isn’t on the list due to his close, controversial decision win over WBA junior middleweight champion Austin Trout.

Mayweather said at the post-fight press conference last night that he saw the Canelo-Trout fight as very, very close and he didn’t agree with the lopsided scores that were given to Canelo for the in Texas.

In other words, one gets the impression that Mayweather feels that Canelo still has unfinished business against Trout before he’ll be looking for a fight with him.

Mayweather said “I’ve got several names I’m thinking about for my next fight…If I were to choose Canelo and then beat Canelo… I thought Canelo’s fight with Trout was a lot closer than they had it. If me and Canelo were to fight and he took a loss, they’re [the fans and media] are going to come up with another opponent.”

The judges’ lopsided scores given to Canelo for his win over Trout didn’t help him with getting the Mayweather fight because it looks as if Mayweather is invalidating the scoring of the fight by the judges, which you can’t blame him because it looked to a lot of fans like Trout had done enough to win or at the very least get a draw. So the judges gave Canelo the victory, but it’s really being recognized by Mayweather as a conclusive enough win for him to bother with him.

It’s a controversial win. If Golden Boy Promotions is smart, they’ll realize that Canelo has to fight Trout again and beat him without controversy in a fight held outside of Texas and without the open scoring if they want Mayweather to start showing interest in fighting him because he clearly doesn’t recognize Canelo’s win over Trout as being a conclusive one for him to want to fight him. That’s the thing about Mayweather. He doesn’t fight guys that are being followed around by the stench of a controversial decision like Canelo is with his win over Trout.

As far as who Mayweather will end up fighting in September, I see it coming down to one of the following guys:

Danny Garcia
Lucas Matthysse
Lamont Peterson
Devon Alexander
Miguel Cotto

It’s going to be one of those guys for sure. It won’t be Canelo, it won’t be Amir Khan, and it definitely won’t be Robert Guerrero.
