floyd#30By Chris Williams: Last Saturday night’s fight at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero may not equal Mayweather’s previous fight against Miguel Cotto in terms of pay per view buys, but in one area where it did quite well was at the gate.

The fight hauled in a gate of $9,922, 350 from 14,258 tickets with 1,459 tickets comped. That’s good loot for this fight, especially given that Mayweather was fighting a complete unknown in the minds of many boxing fans in choosing to fight Guerrero instead of a better known fighter. Guerrero didn’t help the PPV card any by getting arrested last April at the New York airport.

The official PPV totals haven’t been released as of yet, but Stephen Espinosa, the head of Showtime Sports, says that the numbers will be over 1 million PPV buys. Just how much over 1 million is still unknown, but if it comes out to 1.1 million then the fight will have turned a profit, according to Dan Rafael of ESPN.

He estimated that the fight had to haul in between 1.1 to 1.2 million PPV buys for it to make a profit, and it looks that’s a real possibility given Espinosa’s early projections.

As far as Mayweather’s next fight goes, he’ll likely be facing one of the following fighters: Amir Khan, Danny Garcia, Lucas Matthysse or Lamont Peterson. I know Saul “Canelo” Alvarez’s name was mentioned by Espinosa as the guy that they want Mayweather to fight, but I don’t see that happening in September and possibly not at all if they can’t get past the money and weight issues that will make the fight all but impossible to put together.

Khan would be in an ideal spot to get the fight, but it comes close to his religious holiday, so he’ll likely not be the one. My guess it’ll be Danny Garcia that Mayweather fights next, although Lucas Matthysse could get the fight if he can get past Peterson this month in their fight on May 18th in Atlantic City, New Jersey.
