By Dan Ambrose: WBC interim light welterweight champion Lucas Matthysse’s manager Mario Arano figures Matthysse will be a super star after his next fight against WBA/WBC light welterweight champion Danny Garcia on September 7th, if Garcia agrees to the fight. Arano sees Matthysse knocking Garcia out.
He then wants to match Mathsse against Amir Khan if Golden Boy Promotions can help set up that fight. Khan has already gone on record saying he wants the fight with Matttysse and thinks he has the style to beat him. This would be a good chance for Khan to prove it by facing Matthysse instead of just talking about it.
Arano said to ESPNDeportes.com “Hopefully Garcia takes the fight [with Matthysse], and hopefully we can get a fight with Khan…Lucas is one step away from becoming a super star and if Lucas knocks out Garcia, as I think it will happen, it is certain that he’ll become a super star.”
As good as Garcia is, it’s probably going to take more than a victory over Danny Garcia for Matthysse to become a super star. Knockout victories over Garcia and Khan will definitely go a long ways towards getting Matthysse close to becoming a star, but he’s going to need a fight against someone like Floyd Mayweather Jr. for him to become a super star.
Khan is perhaps too tainted due to his losses to Garcia, Lamont Peterson and Breidis Prescott for Matthysse to get a huge boost from a knockout win over him. Matthysse needs Mayweather, and if he can beat him then he’ll definitely be at the super star level.
The good news for Matthysse is if he can beat Garcia, he’ll put himself in a good position to get a fight against Mayweather. I doubt that Matthysse will need a fight with Khan to get the Mayweather fight. I believe Mayweather will show a lot of interest in fighting Matthysse if he beats Danny Garcia in September.
As much as I’d like to see Matthysse and Amir Khan fight, I don’t think Khan will say yes to a fight with Matthysse, and even he did say he wanted the fight, Golden Boy might not make that fight due to the high chance of Khan getting beaten.
A fight between Matthysse and Mayweather would be the real interesting fight. You can forget about all the other opponents for Matthysse. Mayweather would be huge for him and it would be a good test to see if Matthysse could land his big power shots on a guy that is playing defense 90 percent of the time.
