matthysse11By Allan Fox: With one week to go before the light welterweight clash between Lamont Peterson (31-1-1, 16 KO’s) and Lucas Matthysse (33-2, 31 KO’s), there are still a lot of tickets available through ticketmaster.com for their May 18th fight staged at the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey.

The seating capacity for the Boardwalk Hall is 10,500. The fight would have been sold out a long time ago had it been staged in Washington, DC, where Peterson fights in front of huge, huge crowds.

It’s too bad Golden Boy Promotions couldn’t stage this fight in D.C because it would have been a lot better for both fighters to be able to get a big gate and make money off the fight.

Putting it in Atlantic City has got to be the worst idea because neither fighter has a fan base there, nor I think the fight wouldn’t have sold out even if they had given more time to generate interest in order to sell tickets.

Matthysse is looking to get a knockout over Peterson and he’s encouraged that he’ll be able to do that after watching Peterson’s recent stoppage win over Kendall Holt last February.

Matthysse said to RingTV “I hope that Peterson is going to be standing there and not moving too much. I saw his last fight, and he’s a solid fighter, and a good fighter. I hope that he is there the same with me, exchanging. I would love that.”

I don’t think Peterson knows any other style other than slugging it out with his opponents. Eventually that’s going to come back to hurt him and it may be that it’ll hurt him in this fight with Matthysse.

Peterson has respectable power of his own and he’s an excellent body puncher. Matthysse is going to have to worry about Peterson’s power as well, because he could surprise him.

Peterson had Victor Ortiz backing off when the two of them fought three years ago in 2010 in their 10 round draw. Peterson also gave Amir Khan a lot of problems in beating him by a 12 round split decision in December 2011.

If Peterson does decide to trade with Matthysse it’s going to give Matthysse his best chance of winning the fight. I think against a boxer, Matthysse could struggle like he did in his losses to Devon Alexander and Zab Judah, but against punchers, it’s a much better situation for Matthysse to win the fight.
