garcia5645By Dan Ambrose: WBC interim light welterweight champion Lucas Matthysse (34-2, 32 KO’s) says he saw the look of worry on WBA/WBC light welterweight champion Danny Garcia’s face last Saturday night after Matthysse had dispatched a very good fighter in Lamont Peterson in three rounds at the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey.

Matthysse says this is the fight that he wants next. He wants Garcia.

Matthysse said to RingTV “I think he [Garcia] looked a little worried and I pointed at him and told him ‘I’m coming for you next.’ If he’s a great champion, a great fighter, he’s going to want to take that fight.”

Garcia did look incredibly nervous moments after Matthysse stopped Peterson. The look on Garcia’s face seemed to show a guy that had just gotten some really bad news.

Garcia’s attitude about a Matthysse fight has been less than eager in the past when asked if he would be interested in fighting Matthysse. Garcia had the option to fight Matthysse recently, but he chose to fight Zab Judah, an arguably much safer fight for Garcia than what he’d be facing if he stepped inside the ring against Matthysse.

Matthysse says he’s looking forward to being “locked inside the ring with Garcia”, and you have to wonder whether he used that terminology because he’s concerned that Garcia will try and run away from the fight.

Right now there’s so much attention on Matthysse because of his big win over Peterson. Before this fight it was easier for Matthysse to be skipped over by guys like Garcia, but not now. If Garcia chooses to avoid the fight with Matthysse then way too many boxing fans will know about it and Garcia will likely lose a lot of fans in the process. He’d still have his titles, but he’ll lose fans if he doesn’t take the fight.

This is fight is the natural setup for a big paying fight against Floyd Mayweather Jr., so it’s worth Garcia’s while to take the fight because if he wins then he’ll likely be picked by Mayweather for a fight in 2014. If Garcia ducks the fight with Matthysse, then I can’t see Mayweather wasting his time with Garcia. He’ll choose likely then Matthysse to fight.

For Garcia, a fight against Matthysse would mean the end of the ride for him. Matthysse could end Garcia’s brief time as a world champion by knocking him out like he’s been doing to other opponents.
