05(Photo credit: Naoki Fakuda) By Sotoman: There was a little bit of everything in last nights boxing fights. We begin with the fight between Lee Purdy and Devon Alexander.  There is no doubt that Alexander’s stock dropped  yesterday, despite the fact that Purdy failed to make weight. Although Purdy was not as impressive, he made Alexander look weak and ill accomplished.  Purdy demonstrated and exposed Alexander’s lack of power.  It is clear that Purdy was not going to win the fight on the score cards, but he had a heart of a lion.

I could truly understand why his corner stopped the fight, when they did. Alexander suggested that many fans would be disappointed with his performance last night, he may just be right.  Alexander needs to do a lot more and fight bigger names, if he wants to be placed in the same column as the top Welterweights or 140 pounders.

On to the Lucas Matthysse & Lamont Peterson fights.  Once again Matthysse proves that his power is to overwhelming for many of the 140 pound fighters.  Peterson was smart to begin boxing and try to avoid the big shots.  Matthysse’s pressure would soon prove to much as Peterson continued to back up.  After realizing there is no way he would outbox Mathysse, Peterson begin to exchange and in little time he met with the canvas, eventually getting stopped in KO fashion.

As Devon Alexander probably loses any big name fight down the road, Lucas Matthysse sets himself up for a huge day with Danny Garcia. Richard Schaefer knows he has a big name fighter in Matthysse.  The big question is: Who do the promoters believe would be the bigger draw down the road?  In my opinion:  Danny Garcia has the popularity to put Mathysse on the map.  Matthysse also has the power and skill to put Danny Garcia on the mat.  It would not surprise many if Danny’s promoters and his team lead him in a different direction.  Danny Garcia has good power and good chin, but Mathysse’s pressure is relentless and would easily expose Danny Garcia.

Last night, the king of the 140 division seemed to have take the throne.  It is time for Matthysse to be respected and given his fair share of big time fights and pay days.  The first one beginning with Danny Garcia.  Great night of boxing! We are all looking forward to more Mathysse fights, Hopefully Garcia/Matthysse!!
