By Dan Ambrose: Paulie Malignaggi was in awe of Lucas Matthysse after watching him dismantle a normally strong-chinned Lamont Peterson last night in three short rounds at the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey.

Comparing him to former middleweight knockout artist Julian Jackson (55-6, 49 KO’), Malignaggi was just astonished how easily Matthysse was able to hurt Peterson each time he would touch him with a shot.

Malignaggi said to Kugan Cassius from iFILM “The guy [Matthysse] has got scary power. He touches you and you go to sleep. I don’t know how he does it. How do you deal with him? He touches you and he hurts you for sure. He’s hurting guys with pretty good chins. This guy just mowed right through him [Peterson]. Danny [Garcia] has got a great chin and pretty good power of his own.”

Malignaggi would like to see Matthysse fight Danny Garcia next if the fight can be made. He’s less interested in seeing Matthysse fight former IBF/WBA light welterweight champion Amir Khan because he sees that fight as a potentially bad match-up for Khan due to his shaky chin and Matthysse’s huge power.

There’s no question that Matthysse has huge power. He’s knocked out his last six opponents since suffering a questionable 10 round split decision to Devon Alexander in June of 2011.

After that fight, Matthysse vowed to take the judges out of the picture for his future fights by knocking everyone out and that’s exactly what he’s done.

Matthysse had also lost a controversial 12 round split decision to Zab Judah in November 2011 in New Jersey in a fight that many boxing fans thought Matthysse had done enough to deserve the victory.

Danny Garcia could be the one that Matthysse fights next if Garcia lets the fight happen. Right now it’s difficult to predict whether he’ll take that fight because last night he looked like he’d seen a ghost after watching Matthysse do away with Peterson in three rounds.

Garcia looked like he was in shock and while he tried to smile to the Showtime cameras after Matthysse put Peterson away, you could see that he was clearly bothered by the ease of which Matthysse had knocked Peterson out.
