Magee picks Kessler to beat Froch this Saturday, May 25th

kessler43By Scott Gilfoid: Brian Magee sees WBA super middleweight champion Mikkel Kessler (46-2, 35 KO’s) as too intelligent, too skilled and much too active for the slower, wide open IBF super middleweight champion Carl Froch (30-2, 22 KO’s) in their fight this Saturday night on May 25th at the O2 Arena in London, UK.

Magee sees Froch as just a wild swinging puncher who doesn’t think like Kessler does when he’s letting his shots go.

Magee said to Sky Sports News about Froch and Kessler’s fight in 2010: “When they were both toe-to-toe, Kessler was cool and smart enough, His boxing brain was still ticking over while Froch was just like a mad dog in a frenzy, throwing wild punches…I do actually think Kessler’s going to do it. I think he’s going to out-box him.”

I agree with Magee. Unlike a lot of Froch’s fans, I’ve watched the Froch-Kessler fight many times and I’m not just guessing from a foggy memory of that fight.

Kessler dominated the fight and he should have won by even wider scores than the ones given to him. Magee is in agreement with me on that point too. He thinks the judges scored the fight too closely, and should have given Kessler a wider victory.

Magee sees Kessler’s body punching as potentially the deciding factor in this fight, as Magee was stopped by Kessler in the third round last December on body shots. Kessler dropped Magee three times with hard body punches, and Magee says he’d never been hit like that before to the body, not even in his loss to Lucian Bute in March of 2011.

Magee thinks Kessler can knock Froch out if he starts throwing body punches. He acknowledges that Froch has a really good chin, but he does think he’s potentially vulnerable to the body if Kessler attacks Froch’s body the way he attacked his own.

Magee sees Kessler’s intelligence as being the key to victory. He doesn’t just lower his head and wildly throw punches while coming forward. He’s precise with his shots and constantly thinking.
