Khan: Negotiations with Mayweather are underway

khan4343By Scott Gilfoid: Amir Khan is saying that Golden Boy Promotions are trying to negotiate a fight between him and Floyd Mayweather Jr. right now. How serious negotiations are is unclear because Golden Boy is pushing hard to try and get Mayweather to fight their future cash cow WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and they need that fight badly for the Mexican fighter to gain a wide audience in the U.S.

Khan said to I Film London “Negotiations are underway. It’s a fight that Floyd Mayweather wants, and it a fight I’d want to take. I’d love to be in the same ring with Mayweather. I know he has flaws. I think my speed will make a difference in this fight. I think I can make a very tough fight for him.”

Who would blame Mayweather for wanting to fight Khan. That’s an easy night’s work for Mayweather. All he does go out and nail Khan with a nice left hook and that’s it;, the fights over. Mayweather would then walk away with another $30 million purse like the one for his recent win over Robert “The Ghost” Guerero earlier this month.

Khan could end up as Mayweather’s next opponent if Golden Boy can’t convince to fight Canelo in September. I don’t know if that fights going to happen though. Canelo may be too big for Mayweather, and I think Floyd’s team will warn him not to take the fight.

The options for Mayweather at welterweight are pretty dreadful at this time. If you take away Manny Pacquiao, there’s pretty much no one for Mayweather to fight other than Khan. That’s an awful fight but Khan at least will make it somewhat interesting in the build-up to the fight with his confidence and some of his quotes.

The fight might be interesting too because of Khan’s hand speed. Mayweather will end up timing him and knocking him down a few times, before that happens, I can see Khan getting in a few good shots on Mayweather. That’ll lead to Mayweather stalking Khan and dropping him with something big, but it’ll still be interesting to watch.

Mayweather’s options for his next fight are as follows:

Amir Khan
Devon Alexander
Marcos Maidana
Keith Thurman
Paulie Malignaggi
Adrien Broner

I’d like to see Mayweather fight Lucas Matthysse or Danny Garcia, but the two of them will likely be fighting in September, so they won’t be available. Alexander isn’t an interesting fight. Maidana would be fun to watch against Mayweather, as would Keith Thurman. Perhaps the best would be Broner, but I’m not sure if Mayweather would fight him because they’re friends. It’ll be interesting to see if they stay friends in the future. If not, then maybe that fight can happen.
