By Scott Gilfoid: Former IBF/WBA light welterweight champion Amir Khan has given up on his idea of trying to avenge his losses to Danny Garcia and Lamont Peterson at 140. Instead, Khan is now moving up to welterweight straightaway and will be looking to fight IBF welterweight champion Devon Alexander in his next fight provided that Alexander gets past British challenger Lee Purdy this month in their fight on May 18th at the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey.
Khan told BoxNation last night “I am getting big for the weight…I could be one fight away from the Mayweather fight if things go to plan. To beat Floyd you have to beat him at his own game…you have to use speed. Of all the fighters who can face him I would have a chance because of my speed. I have got the speed and the ability that can cope with him.”
This is hilarious. Khan barely scrapped by 2nd tier fighter Julio Diaz last Saturday night in winning a questionable 12 round decision in Khan’s home country of the UK, and now Khan is looking past a fight with Devon Alexander. Oh boy, talk about your deluded fighters.
Why does Khan do this to himself? He seems like he’s always looking into the future for fights that have little chance of ever taking place, and the Mayweather fight is a prime example of that.
Khan will probably get the Devon Alexander fight, because Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer was talking about that last night in an interview with BoxNation, but that’s probably about as far as it goes for Khan unless he suddenly develops a greater punch resistance.
Alexander is clearly a better puncher than Julio Diaz, and if he knows he has an opponent with a fragile chin like Khan facing him, he’s going to really go after him in a big way.
It looks like Golden Boy is trying to set up the Khan-Mayweather fight the easy way by having Khan bypass the dangerous rematches with Lamont Peterson and Danny Garcia.
I guess I can’t blame them for doing that because if they throw Khan in with one of them in his next fight, they won’t be able to cash out with Khan in a Mayweather fight because Garcia would likely knock Khan out again, and Peterson would beat him too.
So by steering Khan around the dangerous threat in the form of Peterson and Garcia, Golden Boy seems to be pegging their hopes on Khan being able to get past Devon Alexander. Good luck. Alexander may not be the puncher that Danny Garcia is, but I think he’s a better fighter than him, and I think he’s better than Lamont Peterson too.
I see this backfiring on Golden Boy with Khan getting knocked out by Alexander or at the very least taking a real thrashing that he won’t soon forget. Alexander can flat out fight and I don’t think Khan is going to do well with him, even if they dragged Alexander over to the UK.
