Khan: I’d like to fight Matthysse; I’d beat him

matthysse44By Scott Gilfoid: Amir Khan was really impressed with the performance from WBC interim light welterweight champion Lucas Matthysse last night in watching him demolish Lamont Peterson in three brutal rounds.

Khan thinks his fighting style would be perfect for Matthysse for some reason despite the fact that Khan was badly hurt by a much lesser puncher in his last fight in his narrow win over Julio Diaz.

Khan said after the fight: “I’d like to fight Lucas Matthysse. My style would definitely suit Matthysse and I’d beat him. This wants me to stay at 140.”

I think Khan should avoid a fight with Matthysse at all costs. If he does that he’s going to get knocked out and he’ll ruin his chances of getting a big payday fight against Floyd Mayweather Jr. What Khan says and what he actually does are two different things. Khan may say he’d like to fight Matthysse, but there’s no way he’ll do it. Golden Boy Promotions won’t let that happen.

They’re going to either put Khan in with IBF welterweight champion Devon Alexander or Floyd Mayweather Jr. next. They obviously have a pretty good idea what would happen to Khan if they were to put him in with Matthysse right now. It would be like feeding a guppy to a piranha.

I think the fight would last all of one round before Matthysse connected with a big right hand or left hook and knocked Khan out cold. What we saw Matthysse do to Peterson last night would be much speeded up to where Khan was out of there in one round. It would be another Matthysse vs. Mike Dallas Jr. fight with Matthysse landing a big left hook and Khan hitting the deck.

I think Khan needs to realize his situation right now. He was knocked out by Danny Garcia last year and since then Golden Boy has been putting him in with 2nd tier fighters, and he’s still not looking in those fights. Khan’s situation is pretty precarious. He’s on the verge of being beaten again and likely knocked out of the top 15. He’s lost two out of his last four fights, and if he gets knocked out again he’ll have lost three out of his last five fights with his only two wins coming against 2nd tier opposition.

The sad thing is Khan is talking as if he doesn’t understand what’s happening. He’s still talking like he was before he was knocked out by Danny Garcia. Things are much different now with Khan. Golden Boy pulled him back from the main competition and pretty much have him in the minor leagues because of his back to back losses to Lamont Peterson and Danny Garcia. Khan doesn’t seem to understand what’s going on with that.
