By Scott Gilfoid: WBA super middleweight champion Mikkel Kessler (46-2, 35 KO’s) thinks IBF super middleweight champion Carl Froch (30-2, 22 KO’s) will be a little a little too hot-headed for their rematch this month on May 25th and will come out on fire looking to pay him back for his previous loss to the Dane three years ago.
Kessler sees Froch’s aggressiveness working against him because he’ll be fighting like he’s completely lost his sense and be fighting like a wild man instead of with intelligence.
Kessler said to Ritzau “He is making a lot of mistakes. I also think he never changes…[he will come flying out of his corner from the opening bell…that’s good for me.”
Yes, Froch will no doubt come out fighting in a primitive manner thinking he can blast through Kessler like he did against Lucian Bute and Yusuf Mack, and that’ll end up turning Froch into someone that isn’t thinking with his head. It’ll be easy pickings for Kessler because he does really well against aggressive guys that lead with their head.
It’ll be like watching Kessler’s fight against Librado Andrade from years ago in 2007. Froch is a chip off the hold Andrade block, and I can’t see any difference between the two fighters when Froch is fighting aggressively.
The best thing for Froch to do is crap his normal fighting style, forget about his loyal British fans that will be cheering him on to fight like a wild man, and instead look to copy what Ward did in beating Kessler in 2009 by using a powerful jab and then collapsing forward with 1-2 combinations followed by a hard clinch.
Once the referee separates the two fighters, Froch should repeat the same thing by nailing Kessler with a jab and then another left-fight combination followed by a clinch. That’s the about the only thing Froch can do to win.
If he stays in the pocket and tries to match Kessler punch for punch, he’ll get beat because Kessler is too fast and throws better combinations than him. Froch will probably get clowned if he fights like that, and I can see him turning into another Andrade before our eyes. That’s why he needs to use the Andre Ward blue print in how to beat Kesskler.
I don’t really care who wins this fight. Both of them are future fodder opponents for Ward, and all we’re seeing here is which one of these guys will end up as Ward’s future victim. My guess is Kessler will be the guy that wins the fight and faces Ward, but I’d rather see Froch win because that’s a heck of a lot more fun.
