chavez34By Dan Ambrose: Former WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (46-1-1, 32 KO’s) won’t have to worry about melting down to 160 lbs. for his next fight on August 3rd in Mexico city, Mexico. According to Steve Kim, Bob Arum of Top Rank is reporting that Chavez Jr. will be fighting middleweight contender Brian Vera (23-6, 14 KO’s) next in a catch weight of 165 pounds.

Chavez Jr. had been in negotiations previously with recent title challenger Martin Murray, but the two were unable to successfully negotiate the fight. Perhaps it’s for the best because Murray wanted the fight to take place at 160 lbs. and it would have been really difficult for Chavez Jr. to get down to the 160 lb. limit.

Chavez Jr. hasn’t fought since losing to Sergio Martinez last September and he’s really put on a of weight in the past 8 months.

As it is, it’s going to be incredibly hard for Chavez Jr. just to take off the weight to get down to 165 lbs. because in recent photos of him, Chavez Jr. looks to be well over 200 pounds. My guess is he got up as high as 220 lbs, and taking off 60 pounds is going to be really difficult for him.

As long as Chavez Jr. isn’t too weight drained from taking off all that weight to get to 165, he should be able to beat Vera if he doesn’t gas out. Vera, 31, will be there to be hit and if Chavez Jr. goes to the body for 7 or 8 rounds, he should be able to stop Vera without any problems.

Vera is kind of the same type of fighter in that he tends to gain a lot of weight after he rehydrates and he often looks bigger than his opponents. However, he doesn’t rehydrate up as high as Chavez Jr., and he doesn’t throw to the body like Chavez Jr. does.

Vera has won his last four fights and looked good in beating Sergio Mora, Sergiy Dzinziruk, Donastas Bondorovas and Toronze Washington.
