If Burns beats Gonzalez, he’ll face Miguel Vazquez next

burns42(Photos courtesy PR Best Boxing Promotions/Joel Colon) By Scott Gilfoid: Matchroom Sport promoter Eddie Hearn wants to match his fighter WBO lightweight champion Ricky Burns (35-2, 10 KO’s) against IBF lightweight champion Miguel Vazquez (33-3, 13 KO’s) in a unification bout next if Burns gets past his #1 challenger Jose Gonzalez (22-0, 17 KO’s) this Saturday night at the Emirates Arena, in Glasgow, Scotland, United Kingdom.

That’s a big if because Gonzalez is a huge, huge puncher of the first order and Burns is there to be hit all night long. Burns seems to see himself as a puncher lately and I’m wondering if his 4th round knockout win over Kevin Mitchell last September may have planted some ideas in his head about his power.

I mean, I’m really hoping Burns comes to slug with Gonzalez because he’ll be tasting some major power tomorrow night and I don’t think Burns will be able to take those shots. There’s a huge a right hand shot with Burns’ name written all over it that Gonzalez is going to throw and it’s one of those shots that won’t be stopped until it hits Burns on the chin.

I hope for Burns’ sake he’s got a good chin because that punch is going to be like a giant 6.5 mile wide asteroid heading for earth when it lands, and Burns is going to have to possess the best chin in the lightweight division in order to take it without going to sleep.

There haven’t been too many fighters that have been able to take Gonzalez’s big power shots recently. Gonzalez has knocked out 12 out of his last 13 opponents and that tells you the man has pot POWER with a capital P. Burns says he’s ready to trade with Gonzalez or box him. He’ll do whatever Gonzalez wants to do, but I think it’s going to end badly if Burns is serious about what he says because he doesn’t have the power to be getting in any wars with a guy like this. Burns is more of a feather-fisted type of fighter who wins his fights by decision, and if he tries to slug with Gonzalez then he’ll be fighting his fight and making it easy for him.
