Hughie Fury stops Finfera in 2nd round

By Scott Gilfoid: 18-year-old heavyweight prospect Hughie Fury (4-0, 3 KO’s) scored a 2nd round TKO win over winless Janos Finfera (0-5) on Friday night in Timisoara, Romania. The 6’6” Fury unloaded an avalanche of shots that ended with the 29-year-old Finfera getting stopped.

Fury, the cousin of unbeaten heavyweight contender Tyson Fury, is still a work in progress at this point in his career. He gets hit too easily, he lacks power and he relies too much on his jab. He reminds me of a taller version Kevin Johnson in that he’s got a good jab but lacks the power needed to beat the better heavyweights in the division.

Right now, Hughie’s promoter is matching him very, very softly, and I agree with that. He’s real young and doesn’t have the power or the experience to be in with quality heavyweights.

Hughie Fury will be fighting next month on June 8th against Hungarian journeyman Sandor Balogh (3-29-4, 1 KO’s) in a scheduled six round fight at the International Events Arena – Breaffy House Resort, Castlebar, Ireland. Balogh, 31, has lost his last seven fights.

Hughie’s promoter sees him as a future star and world heavyweight champion. I’m not sure if Hughie will ever get to that stage, but I can see him as one of the contenders in the top tier, in the same mold as Alexander Dimitrenko or Kevin Johnson, but not as a major player. The power just isn’t there and neither is the defense.

He’s 18, so maybe the power will develop at some point and if he can get a good trainer to teach him some defense, Fury could rise up to be a top 5 heavyweight someday, but if things remain as they are, I don’t see him as a top guy.

I picture him as a fringe contender at best, someone that does well against certain types of heavyweights but who comes apart at the seams when put in with a puncher or someone with a lot of speed.
