By Scott Gilfoid: WBC interim light welterweight champion Lucas Matthysse (34-2, 32 KO’s) may have just come off an impressive 3rd round stoppage victory over Lamont Peterson last Saturday night, but the victory wasn’t enough to impressive Matchroom Sport promoter Eddie Hearn enough to think Matthysse would do well against Amir Khan.

Hearn thinks Khan would still out-box Matthysse if that fight were to be made.

Hearn said to I Film London “Khan out-boxes Matthysse all day long, but obviously if he gets hit he gets knocked out, but so would 90 percent of the rest of the division.”

Hearn is right about the 90 percent part, and he may be partially right about Khan out-boxing Matthysse. I think Khan would out-box Matthysse, but the part where I disagree with Hearn is where he says “all day long.”

To me, that suggests that Khan would be able to out-box Matthysse for a long period of time if they were to fight, and I just don’t see that happening. Khan might out-box Matthysse for a round or two, but he’s going to catch up to Khan and nail him, and once Matthysse were to nail Khan with a hard shot, the fight would be over. We’re talking Matthysse vs. Mike Dallas Jr. type of fight. Khan would look good until he gets hit and then he’ll be on the canvas wondering what hit him.

Khan said he thinks he can beat Matthysse, and that he’d like to stay at 140 so that he can fight him and Danny Garcia to prove himself. Of course we know that Khan is moving up to 140 now and that the chances of him fighting Matthysse are slim and none.

Khan will be fighting either Floyd Mayweather Jr. or Devon Alexander next. Golden Boy is going to luck to try and get Khan a big payday or a shot Alexander’s IBF title.
