Haye: Fury doesn’t want to fight me

fury54By Scott Gilfoid: Sick of hearing undefeated heavyweight contender Tyson Fury (21-0, 15 KO’s) calling him out 24/7 in the media, former WBA heavyweight champion David Haye finally called Fury’s bluff by having his management contact Fury’s handlers to arrange a fight between them.

Instead of Fury’s management gladly accepting the fight, they told Haye’s manager that they’re looking for other fights.

Haye told “thesun.co.uk “My people contacted his people and they don’t want it. They pretty much said ‘no, we’re going in another direction. So maybe he should stop screaming and shouting about how much he wants to fight me, although if he did that, he wouldn’t get any coverage.”

So in another words, Fury has been name dropping all this time in using Haye’s name to get attention from boxing fans. Name dropping is a technique that some fighters use to raise their status with boxing fans by trying to have fans connect their names with fighters that have accomplished more in the sport.

By mentioning the name of a better known fighter, the name dropper puts himself in the same class as the fighter. Unfortunately it works because boxing fans generally don’t have much understanding of the sport and believe that the lesser fighter is in the same class as the guy that he’s calling out or comparing himself to.

Fury has been mentioning three names – David Haye, Vitali Klitschko and Wladimir Klitschko – over and over and over again for the past year, and it’s definitely gotten him a lot of attention that he wouldn’t otherwise have received from boxing fans. Given Fury’s limited experience in the ring, it’s laughable that he would even mention these fighters.

Fury was calling Wladimir out after having struggled against the likes of John McDermott. And now after Fury’s recent win over Steve Cunningham in New York, it’s sad to hear Fury talk about any heavyweight because he looked so horrible. Cunningham knocked Fury down in the 2nd round and would have finished him off if he had any kind of stamina.

Fury’s promoter is positioning him into a fight with Kubrat Pulev in an IBF heavyweight title eliminator for later this year. If Fury wins that fight, he becomes the mandatory challenger to IBF heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko. What a mismatch that’ll be. I’m trying to picture Fury getting hit repeatedly with huge right hands like the one that Cunningham knocked him down with.

Haye will be battling Manuel Charr, #8 WBC, on June 29th in Manchester, UK.
