Groves crushes Gonzalez

By Scott Gilfoid: Not surprisingly, unbeaten super middleweight contender George Groves (19-0, 15 KO’s) stopped Noe Gonzale (30-3, 22 KO’s) in a 5th round TKO on Saturday night at the O2 Arena in London, UK.

Groves dropped Gonzalez with a hard right hand to the head. To his credit, Gonzalez staggered to his feet, but referee halted the fight anyway.

It looks like the high quality sparring that Groves got with Mikkel Kessler paid off for him, as he used a right hand looked just like the kind of right hands that Kessler likes to throw.

It honestly wasn’t much of a fight. Groves looked like had a 15 pound weight advantage over Gonzalez, perhaps more, and he hit him at will for 5 rounds with very little coming back from Gonzalez. The only positive thing I can see that Gonzalez did was throw a few power shots near the end of the 4th.

This really wasn’t much of a fight. Gonzalez was just covering up like a sparring partner from the start of the fight and held that pose until he took a right hand to the head in the 5th that finished him off.

I give Eddie Hearn a lot of credit for finding another soft opponent for Groves to beat because this was just another mismatch courtesy of Hearn. But Groves is going to have to step it up at some point and I don’t think he’s going to do well because Hearn has spoiled him with so many weak opponents one after another. This was supposed to be a big named opponent that Groves was fighting on this card, but instead of a top name, we get Gonzalez, a fighter that was knocked out in two rounds by Adonis Stevenson last year in April.

I didn’t like how Groves looked when he took a few hard head shots in the 4th round. I think there may be some weakness there for Groves if he gets hit a lot by a good super middleweight that can punch.
